Friday 08/14/09 service plays chatter/comps/requests & gm strategy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 7 preview and picks

Friday, August 14

BC LIONS AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (+3, 46.5)

No matter who starts at quarterback, if the offensive line doesn’t do the job, you won’t win a football game. Cody Pickett will try to ignite the Argos offence but how will he do that if he has no time to find his receivers and throw the ball? And how is he to perform miracles when his head coach, Bart Andrus, seems way over his head when play calling three-down football? Calling a sweep on the weak side on a third and short situation last week in Montreal comes to mind. It’s even worse when the entire team gives yardage by the ton through terrible penalties. The B.C. Lions have had their fair share of problems and a QB controversy of their own. But they are a much better team than the Argonauts at this point and should win this one.

Pick: B.C. -3

(973) BOSTON RED SOX
(974) TEXAS RANGERS
Take "Under"

Long flight for the Boston offense, playing at home yesterday against Detroit. Lefty Jon Lester is on a roll (2.89 ERA last three starts), a great strikeout pitcher, fanning 165 in 147 innings. He faces a Texas team on a 6-3 run under the total. Boston's offense has been ice cold on the road of late, and faces Kevin Millwood (9-7, 3.38 ERA), who has been terrific all season. Can't see many runs in this one, play the Red Sox/Rangers Under the total.

Friday mlb totals comp-GC-

On Friday night the Bonus Play is on the over 8.5 runs in the NY.Mets/Sanfrancisco Giants game.Rotation numbers 957/8 at 7:10 eastern. This game qualifies in a nice totlas system that averages 11.3 runs. What we want to do is play the over for certain road favorites off a home favored win scoring 4 or less runs on 5+ hits and taking on an opponent that comes in off a road dog win. Both the Mets and Giants fit this scenario tonight. In the series 3 of the 4 games have gone over this year and the Mets have gone over 7 of 10 times vs winning teams in the second half. The Mets also hit leftys better than rightys this year.In the pitching matchup have B.Zito going for SF and he has been awful again on the road this year with an era at nearly five.In his 4 starts vs the Mets 3 have gone over the total. The Mets counter with righty Bobby Parnell making just his second start out of the pen.In his first start he threw a ton of pitches and was removed after failing to make it out of the third inning. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in that one and was lucky the bullpen saved him as he left a bunch of men on.He figures to struggle here once again tonight which could spell trouble for the Mets pen. This one looks like an over tonight. Also on Friday I have my 2009 7 Unit MLB GOY going. This big play is backed with 2 Power systems. One of which is 17-1 and wins by nearly 4 runs per game. The Bonus Play take the over in the Mets/Giants game bol GC-

Kansas City Royals vs. Detroit Tigers Detroit Tigers
-120 at SPBOOK > 12h.
1* Take the Detroit Tigers on the Moneyline, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and the Tigers are the superior overall team at home here Friday night. The Tigers are 36-18 at home this season and they are 17-6 in their last 23 games as a home favorite. The Royals are just 0-6 in Zack Greinke's (11-7, 2.43 ERA) last 6 starts after a quality start in his last outing and they are also just 13-33 in Greinke's last 46 starts as a road underdog. The Royals are just 1-11 in their last 12 road games against a lefty starter and Greinke has struggled over his last 3 starts with an ERA of 5.50. Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 3.12) has an ERA of just 3.19 over 17 career starts against the Royals and I look for a strong outing from him after a rough outing in his last start which was against the Minnesota Twins. Take the Detroit Tigers as my MLB Bonus Play for Friday night.

Cleveland Browns vs. Green Bay Packers Cleveland Browns
+3-120 at BOOKM > 1d.
Former Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini was 3-1 SU during last year's exhibition season with New York. He's now in his first year in Cleveland and has brought most of his staff with him. You can be sure that he wants Browns ownership and fans to know that he can make this team a winner and that he was the right man for the job. A win here would increase everyone’s confidence following the Browns disappointing 4-12 finish to the 2008 season.
While Browns Quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Andersen will never be confused with the Joe Montana and Steve Young controversy years ago in San Francisco, they are both capable of being starters in the NFL- Andersen played in the Pro Bowl a few years back and Quinn lead Notre Dame to several winning seasons and Bowl games. That was the past and they must now impress the new coaching staff that they can produce in the new offensive system as they battle for the starting position. Not only will this starting battle insure that both of these guys are going to be playing their best, but that they will be splitting a lot of playing time during the Preseason.
After a disappointing 6-10 finish last season, Green Bay hired Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers to install his 3-4 defensive system. While starting positions are up for grabs, changing from the 4-3 to the 3-4 will take some learning and may allow Cleveland’s battling QBs to mae some big plays in this preseason contest.
7* Play On Cleveland

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays Tampa Bay Rays
-110 at SPBOOK > 13h.
The Blue Jays make the long trip south to Cigar City to face the hometown Rays in a three-game weekend set. Toronto is 23-33 (-8.5) on the road this season and a miserable 15-27 (-14.7) when facing division opponents overall. The Jays will send ace right-hander Roy Halladay to the bump knowing they are 4-5 in his nine starts on the road this season although he has a record of 4-2 with an ERA of 2.81 in those contests. He has struggled recently going 1-2 over his last three outings with an ERA of 3.37. Halladay has already faced this Rays team three times this season with the Jays suffering a trio of losses with two of those coming north of the border and one in Tampa. Halladay is 11-26 (-17.0) in road games when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season since 1997 and 8-28 (-19.8) in road games vs. teams outscoring opponents by 0.5 or more runs per game in the second half of the season since 1997. Halladay and the Jays will face a Rays team that is 36-18 (+8.6) at home and 23-16 (+8.8) when facing division opponents. The Rays are also 46-29 (+19.5) versus an AL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.300 or better over the last 2 seasons and 17-4 (+12.4) in home games after allowing 8 runs or more the last 2 seasons. The key angle for tonight’s matchup states that Tampa Bay is 13-0 (+13.7) in home games after allowing 9 runs or more the last 2 seasons. The Rays will send James Shields to the mound with his .500 record at home and an ERA of 3.20 this season. Tampa Bay is 27-18 (+12.1) versus Toronto the last three seasons including 7-2 (+5.5) this year. They are 15-6 (+9.4) when playing at home versus the Jays and a perfect 3-0 (+3.1) at the Trop this season. We will back the better team here as a small underdog or small favorite in either case it’s a win for the Rays at the Trop on Friday night.

Graded Selection: 2* Tampa Bay Rays 3 Toronto Blue Jays 2

Houston Astros vs. Milwaukee Brewers Houston Astros
+115 at BOOKM > 13h.
Take Astros 1-Dime Play
We get great value and that's because the Astros are traveling tonight from Florida to Milwaukee. I don't mind this as they pick up an extra hour of sleep on the way and it's been a known fact that they normally do not feel this kind of a trip until game 2.

Astros will throw their best starter out there on Friday and he is turning into a flat out ace in front of our eyes. His struggles have always been road starts and he's still not getting respect here as a road under dog despite having a 3.1 ERA on the road this year including a 1.16 ERA in his last 5 road starts. I don't mind backing him here again as an underdog against the Brewers who are 2-6 in their last 8 vs. LH starter and are batting only .217 vs. LHP scoring 4.13 in their last 10 games. As mentioned in today's article Wandy Rodriguez won't have to face two hitters in Hart and Weeks who usually hit him pretty well, Hart (11-27) and Weeks (5-16). Astros are 7-3 in Rodriguez's last 10 starts vs. LH starters. In his last 5 starts vs. the Brewers he has a 1.40 ERA. He has plenty of gas throwing just 53 pitches a start ago. Brewers send Gallardo to the mound and he's 1-4 in his last 5 on 4 days rest and as a -110 to -150 favorite.

Gallardo has not thrown the ball well of late well I should not say that he had a terrible outing at LA and had a nice bounce vs. Houston. However, I expect him to slip up here a bit and have a let down enough to capitalize on the Astros who are coming off a 4 games series with the Marlins where they scored 30 runs.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles (+135, 10)

The Halos are on a cross-country tour of the American League East and Central divisions, starting Friday in Baltimore. Los Angeles boasts one of the best road records in the majors, going 17-5 in its last 22 tilts away from home, and is an overwhelming 20-9 versus the AL East this season.

The Angels are fresh of a dominating performance against the division’s reigning champs, the Tampa Bay Rays, and own a 21-7 record in their past 28 meetings with the Orioles – including taking five of six games against Baltimore this year. The Angels hit a collective .314 BA and outscored Baltimore 39-25 in those contests.

Los Angeles’ bats led the way versus Tampa Bay, scoring 24 total runs during its three-game sweep. The Halos lineup is hitting a major-league best .289 BA and is averaging just under six runs per game.

“We did a good job this series, and it's carried over from the last 50 to 60 games or so," manager Mike Scioscia told the media following Wednesday’s series finale. "And it needs to continue. So it was a good series, but we need to take it on the road this weekend."

Pick: Los Angeles -143

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves (-133, 8.5)

The long MLB schedule is taking its toll on Atlanta Braves starter Jair Jurrjens.

The young righty was one of the best-kept secrets in baseball at the start of the year, but has shown signs of wearing down in recent outings.

Jurrjens has allowed eight earned runs in his past two starts (both against the Los Angeles Dodgers), seven of which came in the fifth inning. He failed to pitch more than five innings in each outing and allowed two home runs after keeping the ball in the park in his previous three starts.

"I wasn't throwing my slider for strikes, so I just had two pitches to throw," Jurrjens told the media last week. "They make it really difficult on you. I threw some close pitches and it got my pitch count up."

The 23 year old’s frustrations boiled over in his most recent start, when he was ejected by home plate umpire Eric Cooper after giving the official a piece of his mind while leaving the game.

His last two appearances have played over the total and Atlanta has an over/under record of 7-4 this month heading in Friday’s series opener.

Pick: Over 8.5

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Adam Wainwright (St. Louis Cardinals)

Wainwright (13-7, 2.73 ERA) has a streak of nine straight quality starts dating back to June 21. During that streak, he has lasted at least six innings each time out and never allowed more than two earned runs.

The key for the 27-year-old hurler? He’s allowed only one home run during the streak and has a 62:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

His most recent start was rock solid, as he gave up only one run over 6 2-3 innings against the Pirates. He also struck out six and issued no free passes.

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees)

As fall approaches, that can mean only one thing – Andy Pettitte is getting into postseason form.

Pettitte (9-6, 4.14 ERA) had a first half to forget, but has failed to notch a quality start only once since the All-Star break. The left-hander has a 1.87 ERA since the mid-summer classic, leading the team to wins against AL East foes Toronto, Boston and Baltimore.

In his most recent start, a 5-2 win over Boston, Pettitte just five hits over seven innings as he didn’t allow a runner to cross home plate.

"Andy has pitched in so many big games for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told the Associated Press. "He was great.”

Slumping

Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

It appears like the right-hander is human after all.

Haren (11-7, 2.57 ERA) looked like a Cy Young candidate in early July. But it’s been all downhill since then. The right-hander has been tagged for five runs in each of his past two starts and hasn’t had a quality start since July 18. Over the past 23 innings he has allowed 17 runs.

His most recent outing, a 5-2 loss to the Nationals, saw him allow a pair of home runs in a game for the first time since May 23.

Bobby Parnell (New York Mets)

Manager Jerry Manuel apparently really has it in for this kid. Parnell (2-4, 3.94 ERA) appeared to finally find a groove in the team’s suspect bullpen, but due to other player’s repeated failure and various injuries, he had a shot to make his first start of the year last week.

That was, until Manuel showed zero faith in him by yanking him as soon as he got into trouble. Parnell lasted just 2 1-3 innings against the Padres, as he yielded two earned runs on four hits and three walks.

The real wager for his start on Friday against the Giants, is: will he last seven innings or give up seven runs before he’s pulled this time?

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Connecticut Sun at Washington Mystics (-3.5, 155.5)

This game figures to have no shortage of offense.

The Sun have both the league’ fifth-best offense (77 ppg) and defense (73.9 ppg). But lately, the team has embraced scoring the basketball, as four of its past five games have gone over the total, including its past two.

Connecticut also is coming off a home game against Seattle on Thursday night, and figures to be more inclined to try to score, rather than dig in on defense.

Meantime, Washington has had no problem putting up points, as it also averages 77 points per game. The Mystics have seen seven of their past nine games top the number, with none going into overtime.

Pick: Over

Sacramento Monarchs at Los Angeles Sparks (-6, 139)

The Sparks likely won’t be a great team this year. But there is enough time left for them to become a good one, and that is just what they are playing like.

Los Angeles, which was bolstered by the recent return of Lisa Leslie from injury, has won three of its past five games, including a 59-56 win over the Monarchs in Sacramento earlier this month. The Sparks string of good play can be attributed to its improving offense.

The team is averaging a horrendous, 70.3 points per game, but has topped the 75-point mark in two of its past three games. The Monarchs, however, would love to see any kind of improvement. The team yields a staggering 79 points per game and has lost three of its past five.

Pick: Sparks
